Although the world was still hoping these missing children would be found safe, the worst possible news was confirmed earlier this month. Tragically, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan’s remains were found behind their stepfather’s house by investigators.

Evidence Points to Cover-Up, Implicates Uncle

Tylee Ryan (17) and her half-brother Joshua “JJ” Vallow (7) were last seen on September 8, 2019. Photos of them along with their mother, Lori Vallow Daybell, and uncle Alex Cox appeared on social media.

According to reports, investigators used GPS data from Cox’s phone to pinpoint the location of the bodies. That heavily implies that Cox was involved in hiding the evidence, if not in the deaths of the children.

During the months the children were missing, Lori and Chad Daybell avoided answering questions and eventually fled to Hawaii together. That’s where Lori was finally arrested on charges of child abandonment. Now that her children have been confirmed dead, we’ll have to wait and see if she and her husband are charged with murder as well.

Idaho Doomsday Couple Made Outrageous Claims

New details have emerged about Lori and Chad Daybell, too. According to an affidavit released by the county sheriff’s office, Lori was convinced that her children had become “zombies.”

The word, in this context, seems to mean people whose souls have been stolen and replaced by demons. The twisted beliefs seem to stem from Chad Daybell’s doomsday preaching, which combined religious extremism with “prepper” culture.

Additional Testing Ordered

Although the remains were autopsied already, Ada County Coroner Dotti Owens says that more testing is needed.

“Outside and ancillary testing has been ordered and will take several weeks to return. Once all results are received, the forensic pathologist’s reports will be provided to the Fremont County Coroner,” Owens said in a news release.

It is likely that investigators are waiting to file any charges directly related to the children’s death until they have iron-clad evidence. At the moment, authorities have not released a cause of death.

In addition, followers of the case are curious to see autopsy results on Tammy Daybell, the first wife of Chad Daybell, who died suddenly last year. Given that Lori Vallow Daybell’s brother, Alex Cox, shot and killed her estranged husband last year, the timing is suspicious. Charles Vallow alleged that Lori had joined a doomsday cult in his divorce filing.

Lori and Chad married two weeks after his first wife’s death.

Alex Cox also died suddenly from what appeared to be natural causes. And Joseph Ryan–Tylee’s father and Lori’s ex-husband–died of a presumed heart attack in 2018. He had previously tried to sue Lori for breaking their custody agreement in 2006. The sheer number of deaths surrounding the doomsday couple surely warrant additional investigation.
